Nostalgie...
Het gebeurt niet ieder jaar dat er op een bluesfestival 30 kaarsjes worden uitgeblazen. Het begon allemaal in 1988 met als toevluchtsoord Café De Zwaan en met als eerste namen op de affiche onder meer Howlin' Bill, Roland & André Brasseur en de uit Aarschot afkomstige band Mardi Gras. In de begin jaren was ik zeker nog niet vaste klant op Swing Wespelaar zoals het destijds noemde. 1990 was een editie dat ik toch nogmaals naar Swing Wespelaar afzakte voor toen de 'Blues Chevy's' en de Gentse bluesrockers 'Give Buzze'. Met de editie van 1995 met de 'Seatsniffers' begon augustus voor mij er stilaan anders uit te zien. De strandvakantie moest beginnen wijken voor de bluesfestivals en tegen 1999 begon het steevast in mijn agenda op te duiken. 
Dat jaar waren de 'Blues-O-Matics' er te gast met Mich Van Sever, Go De Winde, de Jamme en de Jos. De 'Blue Chevy's' waren er ook weer bij en ook Little Jimmy aka Don Croissant. Als 'Borderline resident' kon ik natuurlijk in 2000 niet wegblijven toen de Fred Klee Band op de affiche stond en stilaan begonnen er klinkende namen op de affiche te verschijnen. In 2003 vroeg de mama van Hans (cafébazin De Zwaan) of ik eens niet kon zorgen voor een sponser. Die tijd kon en mocht dit nog en dus zorgde ik voor 'L&M' als sponser. Dat jaar stonden op de affiche onder meer de Australische rocker Rob Tognoni, Chilly Willy, Paul Orta, Ten Years After, de Blue Angels met broer en zus De Bruijn, Kathleen Vandenhoudt en Pascal Michiels. Een traditie toen was ook de 'Gospel mis' en de party in zaal De Zwaan. Beide onderdelen zouden na een tijdje verdwijnen. De organisatie kende ook wel zijn dipjes door de jaren heen maar sinds ettelijke jaren reiken die van 'Swing' zonder meer naar de top. Opmerkelijk is dat dit festival nog steeds 'GRATIS' is en dit ondanks de soms prachtige en indrukwekkende affiche. Dit jaar knopen ze alvast terug aan met '1' traditie en dat is de 'Gospel Mis' en daar zal zelfs mijnheer pastoor tevreden mee zijn.

20 jaar Swing: festival report
Heden...
Op 18,19 & 20 augustus is het dan weer zover. Op vrijdagavond komen onze eigenste 'D-Tale' (album report) hun nieuw album 'Breathe In' voorstellen. Nadien volgt een zinderend optreden in 'Chicago style' met 'Jimmy Burnes' en de avond zal afgsloten worden met niemand minder dan 'Popa Chubby'.
Op zaterdag nemen die van Swing ons terug mee naar de voorbije editie van de 'European Blues Challenge' te Denemarken. Voor diegene die het hebben moeten missen treden hier vandaag naast onze Belgische trots 'The Bluesbones' ook nog aan de Nederlandse revelatie 'Deltonics' en uiteraard de winnaar van de 'contest' de Britse 'Kaz Hawkins Band'. Toch even vermelden dat dit het enige festival op onze bodem is waar de laureaten van de EBC 2017 zullen te zien zijn. Hierna komen we al meteen aan de grote kannonen met als eerste in de rij de Amerikaanse multi-instrumentalist 'Chris Cain'. Ook hij zal zeker en vast zijn nieuw album in de kijker willen zetten (album report). Hierna komen er twee namen die niet al teveel te zien zijn in België met onder meer showbeest 'Earl Thomas' en als ultieme afsluiter niemand minder dan Bernard Allison.
Zondag staan de gospel adepten om 12PM zonder meer te drummen aan de poort van de kerk voor de wederoptredende 'Gospel Mass' met het gospel koor 'Karibuni'. Het zal dus na een zwaar nachtje vroeg dag zijn waarna het grote podium wordt geopend door 'Tensfield'. Meteen daarna komt al het zwaar geschut met de zoon van Magic Slim. 'Shawn Holt & The Teradrops' zullen al heel vroeg het plein aan het dansen krijgen en wat dan gezegd van de daarna aantredende 'JJ Thames'. Verder is er nog de Amerikaan Billy Brach waarna Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat nog eens terug in het land zijn. Het orgelpunt op zondag en van dit driedaags 'GRATIS' bluesfest is zonder meer het 'Heritage Blues Orchestra'. De 'die hards' zullen zonder twijfel hun optreden herinneren op Blues Peer in 2013 met daarin naast Bill Sims Jr. ook nog Junior Mack.
